New Homeowner First-Week Checklist by Brad Jordan

The first week sets up the next ten years in the home.

• Change exterior locks and garage codes

• Test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors; replace batteries

• Locate the main water shutoff, breaker box, and gas shutoff

• Set up remaining utilities you intend to use, internet, trash/recycling, and lawn care

• File warranties and manuals in one folder (or one drawer)

• Schedule HVAC filter change and note the filter size

• Update your address everywhere (see the Address Change Checklist by Brad Jordan)

• Introduce yourself to neighbors and note local trash/recycling days

• Photograph the home's condition room by room for your records

• Make a first-year list: repairs, updates, and seasonal maintenance

Brad always recommends watching your landscaping through all four seasons so you know what you're working with before pulling anything. Some of the best plants you may think are weeds!
